Iodine deficiency is the leading preventable cause of intellectual and developmental disabilities in the world. A lack of folic acid can cause anemia, and low vitamin A is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. Poor nutrition in the first thousand days of a child’s life can stunt their growth — a condition associated with impared cognitive ability, and reduced school and work performance. Nearly half of all under-five deaths in the world are due to malnutrition. [1]
